Evaluations:

“Trains you to design and set up your own experiments, and to know how to troubleshoot when things go awry. He doesn’t throw you into the deep end with no support at the beginning, but he doesn’t hold your hand, either.

Pushes for you to develop confidence in your technique and data. He trusts his students within reason and encourages them to understand and fix their mistakes and to see when they have succeeded.

Expects you to understand the mechanics and rationale behind every step of a procedure or concept before moving on to something new.

Encourages you to present your research and is very hands-on in preparing for such presentations, especially the first few.

He never treats you as if you’re inferior or incapable, and he does not treat questions as unworthy of his time. I always felt safe admitting my mistakes and a lack of knowledge because he always treated me with respect and never talked down to me.

He’ll fight for his students, but I think he needs to allow his students to fight for themselves more often.

Genuine enthusiasm for his field and for teaching students; there was never a time where I felt that he ignored my struggles or successes, and if I ran into a problem and couldn’t find a solution, I knew I could come to him for help.”

Evaluations:

“During my time as an undergraduate research assistant at the Zhuang Lab at the University of Chicago, I had the opportunity to worked with Jary. Jary is a great communicator. He always gave clear instructions and was patient to answer any questions that I had about experiments. What stuck with me the most was how he carefully and patiently walked me through the Sholl analysis protocol and made sure that I can perform the analysis by myself without any problem. His hands-on approach to teaching really helped me learn a lot about conducting experiments and research in general.”
